    FAQs

A standard downlight is generally designed to provide basic general illumination, while an architectural downlight gives greater consideration to visual comfort, beam control, colour quality, glare reduction and how the fitting integrates with the ceiling.

Premium architectural downlights commonly feature deeper recessed light sources, precision optics, interchangeable reflectors and more controlled beam angles.

For residential, retail, hospitality and commercial projects, the quality of the light is often just as important as the amount of light produced.

Lucretia's recessed collection includes architectural downlights designed for general lighting, accent lighting, wall washing and precision spotlighting.

Start by considering what the downlight needs to illuminate rather than choosing only by wattage.

    Important factors include:

    • Ceiling height
    • Room dimensions
    • Required light output
    • Beam angle
    • CRI (Colour Rendering Index)
    • Glare control
    • Colour temperature
    • Cut-out size
    • Trimmed or trimless installation
    • Fixed or adjustable optics
    • Dimming and lighting control requirements

A kitchen, hallway, artwork, retail display and living room may all require different downlight specifications.

For a complete lighting design, different types of recessed downlights can also be combined rather than using the same fitting throughout an entire project.

The best beam angle depends on what you are trying to illuminate.

Narrow beam angles create concentrated light and are useful for accent lighting, artwork, objects and architectural details.

Medium beam angles provide a balance between general and accent lighting and can suit many residential and commercial applications.

Wide beam angles, such as 60°, distribute light across a broader area and are often suitable for general illumination.

For projects requiring greater flexibility, adjustable-beam downlights can allow the beam spread to be changed to suit different objects or spaces.

Beam angle should always be considered together with ceiling height, spacing, lumen output and the required lighting effect.

CRI stands for Colour Rendering Index and describes how accurately a light source reveals colours compared with a reference light source.

For quality residential and commercial interiors, CRI 90 or higher is generally preferred.

High-CRI downlights can make materials, artwork, furniture, food, skin tones and interior finishes appear more natural and accurate.

For premium residential, retail, hospitality, gallery and design-led interiors, CRI 95+ can provide even higher colour fidelity.

Lucretia's recessed architectural lighting range includes high-CRI options, with the NOVA Series offering CRI 95+ performance.

UGR stands for Unified Glare Rating and is one method used to assess discomfort glare from lighting installations.

Lower glare can improve visual comfort, particularly in spaces where people spend extended periods of time, such as homes, offices, hospitality venues and commercial interiors.

However, good glare control is not determined by a single number alone. The depth of the light source, reflector design, optics, beam angle, fitting position and overall lighting layout all influence visual comfort.

Deep recessed architectural downlights can help shield the light source from direct view, producing a more comfortable and refined lighting environment.

Selected Lucretia architectural downlights are designed for low-glare performance, including options specified at UGR <19.

A trimmed downlight has a visible border or flange around the ceiling opening. It is generally straightforward to install and provides a clean finished edge.

A trimless downlight is plastered into the ceiling so the visible trim disappears, creating a more seamless architectural finish.

Trimless recessed downlights are popular in minimalist and high-end residential interiors because the fitting integrates more discreetly with the ceiling.

However, trimless installation requires more coordination during construction and should normally be planned before the ceiling is completely finished.

Lucretia offers both trimmed and trimless architectural downlights, including round, square and twin configurations.

For most residential interiors, 3000K warm white is an excellent choice because it creates a comfortable atmosphere while maintaining a clean architectural appearance.

2700K provides a warmer, softer appearance and can suit bedrooms, lounges and hospitality environments.

3500K offers a balance between warm and neutral white, while 4000K provides a cleaner, more neutral appearance often used in offices, retail and other commercial applications.

The most important consideration is consistency. Downlights, decorative pendants, wall lights and linear lighting within connected spaces should generally be coordinated to avoid unintended differences in colour temperature.

There is no universal spacing rule for downlights.

The correct number and spacing depend on the room dimensions, ceiling height, beam angle, lumen output, furniture layout, surface reflectance and required illumination level.

Simply installing downlights in a uniform grid can create excessive brightness in some areas while leaving important surfaces poorly illuminated.

A considered lighting design should determine what needs to be illuminated first, then position downlights accordingly.

General downlights can provide ambient illumination, while narrow-beam spotlights, wall washers and adjustable fittings can be used to highlight artwork, walls, joinery and architectural features.

These are different methods of controlling and dimming lighting.

TRIAC dimming is commonly used in residential applications and can work with conventional wall-mounted dimmers when the driver and dimmer are compatible.

DALI is a digital lighting control system that allows compatible fittings to be individually addressed, grouped and controlled, making it particularly useful for larger residential and commercial projects.

1–10V uses an analogue control signal and is commonly used in architectural and commercial lighting systems.

The correct control method should be determined during the lighting design and electrical planning stage. The LED driver must be compatible with the selected control system.

Selected Lucretia architectural downlights are available with different dimming and control options to suit project requirements.
