Reconstruction Masterplan: Lighting Design for Bright Moon Temple Paifang Gateway
Following the devastating 2023 fire that severely damaged the Bright Moon Buddhist Society Temple in Springvale, Lucretia Lighting was invited to develop a comprehensive lighting design masterplan for the temple's reconstruction.
This project represents the first stage of the design — focusing on the ceremonial Paifang gateway at the temple’s entrance. Our brief was to honour the traditional East Asian architecture while using modern lighting techniques to enhance the cultural and spiritual presence of the site at night.
From Intricate Carvings to Sacred Calm: Lighting the Paifang Gateway
Each roof tile along the ornate, multi-tiered gateway is carefully lit to reflect the symbolic importance of light in Buddhist spaces. Customised uplighting reveals the detail of timber carvings, gold accents, and dragon motifs without any visual intrusion. Our design ensures the structure remains visually striking from a distance while retaining a sense of sacred calm up close.
This illuminated gateway marks the beginning of a larger vision. In future stages, we will continue to bring light to the inner temple halls, statues, and landscaped grounds — supporting both heritage preservation and spiritual atmosphere through thoughtful illumination.
